A French transplant living in the United States, Carine Magescas’ vision is endowed with a placeless, timeless sensibility. Through delicate overexposure and an ability to strip the image to the essential Magescas captures luminous haven of subdued serenity with a timeless quality. “I work a lot in over-exposure, often reducing the people in the photos to silhouettes in the light” says Magescas, “I like minimal compositions with a level of abstraction that allows the mind to wander.”
Magescas moved from France to San Francisco in 1998 and after a six-year stint in New York City, she was drawn back to the West Coast in 2020 – this time Los Angeles. “I find America extremely inspiring. The sheer scale of landscape is so powerful here; the sense of freedom is palpable and being able to gaze at the horizon with no interruption is amazing. This is something you rarely see in France.”
Magescas is particularly drawn to composition with multiple layers, capturing a sense of abstraction. With these scenes of white and muted hues of the ocean, she encourages us to ponder, and take a moment to contemplate life, much perhaps like her subjects while they’re floating in the water waiting for the next wave. Describing the surfers, Magescas says: “I find them elegant and inspiring with their black silhouettes dissolving in the sleekness of water. “
Magescas’ photography was first discovered after she launched a collaborative photo blog in 2010 – 2filles2villes.com – a weekly dialog in pictures with a friend in Paris. Since then, Magescas’ work has been exhibited both in solo and group exhibitions in New York, London, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Dallas, Palm Beach, Nantucket, the Hamptons and her photographs hang in private collectors’ homes worldwide.
